Questions about Going into Canada and across Ontario

Hi, I was looking for a route to get to Montana from the Northeast of US. Looking at the map I see a way - 91 north into Canada to Montreal, west to Ottawa and go along rt 17 skirting the great lakes to the north until A: ) Sault Sainte Marie and then back to the us and westward on route 2 B: ) Over untl route 71 just before Manitoba and coming back into the US in MN I don't have tow brakes on the toad yet and according to the canadian regulations I would be under the required weight for Ontario but I would not be allowed in Manitoba which is why I was looking to go south before Winnipeg. Also do I need an extra insurance card from my insruance company to travel into canada? Are the roads pretty good up in Ontario and are there enogh gas stations and campgrounds on 17? We will carry our passports now. We took a trip with the two into New Brunswick and coming back we were hassled as we didn't have our birth certificates. The funny thing there, is I got my pocket sized certificate back in eary 80's and all I did was state my name, birth date, and pay 5 dollars to get it. To obtain my pistol carry permit I had to go through both a local, and a Federal background check with finger prints but the birth certificate is considered better lol. We will have our dogs and I will carry proof of rabies papers with me.

RE: coffee pot.... 12v or stove

Last rv I had a Black and Decker under caminet mount which worked well. When I went to buy another for the current coach I found alot of people were having problems with leakage. I ended up with a cheap drip coffeemakerwhich I leave on the counter on the rubber anti skid fabric. I make it the night before and pour it into a thermos. At home I use my hobart burr grinder and drip maker but that's a different scene :) I have to have my coffee and will drink it in any condition - old, fresh, truck stop etc... if necessary.:)

RE: Any one fasten Wheel Cover / Hubcap on duals

@ aeejbe -- pm sent I called wheelmaster and they were, along with me, of the opinion that duallys should have liners in them. I called Winnebago and they sent me two new ones, but just replacement dicor hubcap type. I am toying with something along the line of a piece of strap steel and bolting it to the hub bolts and then using a locking nut on a bolt to attach the hub in the middle. It should'nt look too bad.

RE: cb radio

I run my OLD pearce simpson tiger 40 radio from the 70's when cb was very popular. I have used the radio ever since in any vehicle I use for long highway trips. Channel 19 still has a bunch of helpful drivers chit chatting and keeping up with traffic jams et... The language gets raw sometimes but that was always the case, and it's used by a minority of the drivers. In the class C you can use either a "no ground plane" antenna or do something like I did: I used a bumper/flat bar cb antenna mount -- flat bar with two holes, one in either end. I bolted one side to the bottom of the bumper ( there are plenty of spots either in an empty hole or on the brace bar) and the other hole I put the antenna mount in. Google "cb flat bar antenna mount" I used a 5 foot fiberglass whip ( In my case it was an old francis hot rod antenna but any will do). To keep the whip from whipping around, I poked a couple of holes in a tennis ball ( very small ones so it fit tightly against the antenna) and slid it down until it was forced inbetween the antenna and the bumper. It works well.

RE: Gas caps

It is much faster for theives to punch a hole in the tanks. I believe there is an anti rollover valve in the filler tubes that makes it extremely hard to siphon. :) Locking gas caps are good, however, if you have a vindictive ex wife or girlfriend :)

Any one fasten Wheel Cover / Hubcap on duals

Dicor hubcap style wheel covers are a sloppy fit and one came off once and I got it back, but came off again in an area that was not safe to retrieve. I know they were on properly as I check tire pressure before hitting the road after every campsite and due to the loosening of the caps I made sure they were snug. I called dicor and they claim that they have never heard of a hubcap coming off. I find that hard to believe. The lady I talked to on the phone promised a return call which never came. Has anyone secured the tension fit type hubcaps with a mechanical fastener etc.. so they would not come off again and how did you do it? Thanks

RE: Garmin mounting - vent - beanbag - windshield or other?

Wow some great replies :) I always try to find a cheap solution, even making my own before shelling out money. I looked at the C's dash vent and the dash vent next to the driver is vertical so that might be out. I'll check target and maybe I'll get lucky. That one on amazon is the cheapest I have seen -- thanks for the link. I found on online that uses a cupholder but that would be out as out of my three cupholders, two are taken by my coffee mugs and one by the human navigator :) I can't use the windshield suction mount as it puts the garmin too far away to reach Beanbag might be the best way as it can be slid over to the passenger for changes in programming esp during areas where two hands are needed on the wheel.

Garmin mounting - vent - beanbag - windshield or other?

I resisted buying one until just before the last trip. I love it, if only for the ability to find supermarkets, or even know how far the next rest area is. The mapping ability is great too :) but only when used in conjunction with a paper map. I bought the garmin nuvi 350 from amazon for 199. My question is: What is your favorite method for mounting the unit on the dash etc... Since I got it the day before I left I rigged up a beanbag using a 32 oz bag of beans stuffed in a ditty bag. I closed the neck of the ditty bag around the suction base of the winshield mount and duct taped it in place. I put it on top of some rubber shelf liner on top of the dash. It worked well for a last minute quick fix although I found I had to move it back in position after an area of bumpy roads -- it would slide down the armour all covered dash toward the window. I then only used the garmin on battery power when in the tow. I looked in walmart and was shocked to find the friction mount is 39 bucks, a bit too much for me. Ebay has some for sale and also a vent mount? What is the best? Has anyone made their own?

RE: floor mats for chevrolet 06 3500 series chassis

You can also get a roll of universal carpet at wallmart in the auto section. Cost is around 7 dollars and can be cut to fit. The edges will not fray. I even used it on the last coach to cover some of the carpet where throw rugs would not fit. Not sure if it would be the best for front floor mats as it does not have rubber backing which makes it good for over carpet but not good over tile or other slippery areas. I did buy some recently and intended to make a front floor mat with it, but I have not gotten around to it yet. I am using some carpet remnants at this point.

RE: Battery upgrade?

I have had good luck with the golf cart batteries from sams club. I am on my second motorhome and it was the first upgrade I did to the new one. They had excide before but now carry energizer. Time will tell if the energizers hold up as well as the excides did. GC2 (6V battery) Amp-Hour at the 20 hour rate: 225Ah Minutes at 75 amps: 110 minutes Minutes at 25 amps: 447 minutes This is manufactured by Johnson Controls Mexico.

How do you wax/clean your Cab over area?

There is a small area in the lower center of the cabover that is extremely hard to reach. I can get most of it by use of a 7 foot ladder set up on the side, but my arms are too short. I was thinking about putting a blanket over an extension ladder and leaning it against the cab, being very careful to make sure the (well anchored) ladder rests against the front face evenly with the top sticking out over the roof edge. I can't reach it from the roof and certainly can't walk on todays thin hoods. Not sure standing on the radiator support with the hood open would be feasible either but might work. I have been using Protect all to squirt some in the center area and some towels over my wash brush up to this point, but I really want to put some elbow grease in that area as there are some bug remnants that just refuse to wash out. A good scrub with a cleaner then a wax would be the only way. How does everyone handle this problem? Also what do you use for bug residue? The camco green stuff doesn't work that well and I am afraid to use anything too harsh with the decals like the spray bottles of bug and tar remover.

RE: Wind noise as I drive

Make sure the door is completely closed also. Sometimes you need to really pull on the door to get them to close espec. if you are entering the coach through the house door.

RE: Scan Gauge Question

I didn't get a tach with my manual shift tow and the class c didn't have a temp gauge in it. In order to put a tach in the ford focus you have to get a unit that is called a "tach driver" and an after market tach. The scan gauge allows me to program in the code for the rv and also get the tach. Tho only pain is I have to change the fuel tank size etc when switching vehicles but normally I will leave that set to the camper- I like to watch the mpg display so I can feather my foot accordingly. It wouldn't cost the manufacturers much to put in something like this but of course they won't :(

RE: Scan Gauge Question

I bought another couple of cables off of ebay for it. I have one in my daily car, one in the tow car, and one in the camper. I leave the obdII cable in each vehicle and just transfer the gauge car to car. Before I got the cable I was unplugging the cable for the scangauge from the obdII port every time I moved cars. The scangauge cable plugs into the obdII port and has another plug that goes into the gauge that is easy to disconnect also.

RE: Black sticky stuff oozing around window

It's called Butyl Rubber Tape -- It comes in a roll and you can get it online or at your local rv dealer. After you undo the screws of the frame Use a thin putty knife and be very careful not to damage the rv skin. You have to go around the frame to break the seal of the rubber. Take your time and go slow. It is easier on a warm day, I did it once on a cold day and had to use a heat gun to soften the rubber tape up enough. As you take off the old rubber, make a ball of it and use the ball to help lift the old sticky rubber off the window frame. I use the tape for sealing areas where wires go in and around coax cable connectors that are outside to waterproof them. It is also used around roof vents in the rv.

RE: 2009 Fleewood Tioga

I could see darker colors if you did alot of winter camping, as they absorb the suns heat better.

RE: Lost My Knives in the Divorce

I use Sabatier and Henckels at home and take only one 8 inch Sabatier , an inexpensive Chinese cleaver and, of course, a steel with me in the RV.

RE: Never Again Blue Ox!!

Brackets never bothered me. I figure it's a tow car and the chips and dings from kicked up stones etc.. will be far worse than a small part of the base plate sticking out. The brackets look no worse than some of the brush guards people put on their trucks.

RE: Does anyone really use A teardrop T/T?

If I was in the market I would get one of the Genesis trailers here: http://www.americansporttrailer.com/index.html A bit bigger and heavier but it is the smallest one I have seen that is well built, has a big enough water tank and most important -- a real toilet and shower. I just don't like the outside galley setup.

RE: Over the cab bed sheets?

The overhead bunk in my unit measures 57 by 80. With an egg carton type foam topper my fitted double (standard) sheets fit fairly well. Bigger than a full but not quite a queen
